Che cosa significa essere contemporanei?
Di chi e di che cosa siamo contemporanei?
Giorgio Agamben ha definito il contemporaneo non come chi aderisce pienamente al proprio tempo, ma come chi vi si colloca in una sfasatura critica: chi riesce a leggere il presente a partire dalle sue zone d’ombra, interrogandolo incessantemente.
È proprio attraverso un’interrogazione continua sul contemporaneo che il programma della Casa dell’Architettura di Roma prende forma, affrontando un tema oggi urgente e forse ancora tabù per molte città italiane: il rapporto tra il contemporaneo e la città, e in particolare tra il contemporaneo e Roma.
L’obiettivo non è formulare giudizi definitivi né proporre una critica astratta, ma indagare possibilità di azione, promuovere la cultura del progetto, individuare esempi virtuosi, riflettere sul concetto di patrimonio e dimostrare come intervenire sull’esistente non sia solo possibile, ma necessario. CONTEMPORANEA si articola come un programma di incontri, laboratori, mostre e momenti di confronto, capace di intercettare discipline e pratiche diverse.
Il titolo CONTEMPORANEA rende omaggio alla storica mostra curata da Achille Bonito Oliva nel 1974, assumendone lo spirito di contaminazione e dialogo tra linguaggi. Senza la pretesa di esaurire una questione complessa, la rassegna si propone come una piattaforma di indagine e confronto sulle possibilità che Roma ha oggi di immaginare e costruire il proprio futuro a partire dal suo passato.
Da qui una domanda inevitabile, che CONTEMPORANEA sceglie di porre apertamente:
Roma è ancora una città contemporanea?
In questo senso, CONTEMPORANEA rappresenta per la città di Roma l’occasione di affrontare, nei prossimi anni, un tema a lungo rimasto irrisolto. È la rotta culturale lungo la quale la Casa dell’Architettura ha scelto di muoversi.

What does it mean to be contemporary?
Whom, and what, are we contemporary with?
Giorgio Agamben defined the contemporary not as one who fully adheres to their own time, but as one who positions themselves in a critical disjunction with it: someone able to read the present through its shadows, questioning it incessantly.
It is precisely through this continuous interrogation of contemporaneity that the programme of the House of Architecture of Rome takes shape, addressing a theme that is urgent today and perhaps still taboo for many Italian cities: the relationship between the contemporary and the city, and in particular between the contemporary and Rome.
The aim is not to formulate definitive judgements nor to propose an abstract critique, but to investigate possible courses of action, promote the culture of design, identify exemplary practices, reflect on the concept of heritage, and demonstrate how intervening in the existing built environment is not only possible, but necessary. CONTEMPORANEA unfolds as a programme of meetings, workshops, exhibitions and moments of exchange, capable of engaging diverse disciplines and practices.
The title CONTEMPORANEA pays homage to the historic exhibition curated by Achille Bonito Oliva in 1974, embracing its spirit of contamination and dialogue between languages. Without claiming to exhaust a complex issue, the programme positions itself as a platform for investigation and exchange on the possibilities Rome has today to imagine and construct its future starting from its past.
This leads to an inevitable question, which CONTEMPORANEA deliberately chooses to pose openly: Is Rome still a contemporary city?
In this sense, CONTEMPORANEA represents for the city of Rome an opportunity to confront, in the coming years, a theme that has long remained unresolved. It is the cultural trajectory along which the House of Architecture has chosen to move.
